Day 100: President campaigns as a new incumbent

Wed, 29 Apr 2009 12:23:11 -0700
At Fox High School in St. Louis, Obama sounded as if he was back in campaign mode. “You are who I am working for every single day in the White House,” he told his audience. “We have begun to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off. He did the teachers-are

Wed, 22 Apr 2009 15:09:18 -0700
style =’italic;’ class=’byline’>by Cheryl L. True All dogs need some training. Without it, they’ll always be dogs and do what dogs typically do. A dog training collar can help reinforce commands and signals and help your pet alter its natural behavior. Your dog will be trained to do what you want it to do. Usually a dog training collar will emit a small shock when the person offering the training presses a button on the remote control. When the dog feels the shock, applied usually to the

Record Store Day 2009 Aftermath

Mon, 20 Apr 2009 16:19:34 -0700
The world conspired against me on Record Store Day, 2009. My dog came down with a wicked case of Bordetella and was hacking up masses of sputum all over the house, immediately before I was slated to pile into the Dickmobile and head to Music Saves to celebrate all that is wonderful about independent music. I took the little fellow to the veterinarian, copped some doggie meds and spent the afternoon shooting Robitussin into a beagle mix’s mouth. Good times. Happily, another Dick had my b

How the world sees the G20 summit - fear, apathy and Barack Obama

Sat, 18 Apr 2009 14:55:41 -0700
From Moscow to Baghdad - what politicians want from the G20 Russia Russia has been eagerly looking forward to the G20 summit - not because of Gordon Brown, but for the first meeting between presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev. The encounter between two men widely seen as pragmatists is likely to see the beginning of a new, slightly improved era in US-Russian relations. Under their predecessors, George Bush and Vladimir Putin, ties sank to their most dismal level since the cold war. Rus

HIV testing consent bill could cause insurance companies to deny coverage

Thu, 16 Apr 2009 16:07:41 -0700
LANSING — A bill proposed last month in the state House could remove a mandate that requires persons seeking a test for HIV to sign a consent form to receive the test. Those in favor of the legislation say it will remove a barrier many health care providers find cumbersome and allow them to detect and treat the infection early. But HIV advocates say the move will violate privacy rights and could open the door for insurance companies to deny coverage to HIV-positive patients. H.B. 4583 , propose

To some folks at Treasury (not Tim Geithner). I'm inclined to try to structure it as a discussion, since I may know less than many of the other attendees. Here is what I might contribute. 1. I predict that in the future the issue of financial stability will replace the issue of monetary control as the main issue in macroeconomics. The macroeconomics of the last thirty years will be discarded. The pseudo-physics of Taylor rules, dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models, and most of w
